Dr. Lawrence Mbwambo - Head of Conservation

Lawrence is the Head of Conservation at WWF Tanzania and a member of the WWF International Conservation Leadership Team. He holds a PhD from Sokoine University of Agriculture, with a focus on the impact of decentralized natural resource management on communities and ecosystems, as well as a Master’s and BSc Honours in Nature Conservation from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and a BSc in Forestry from Sokoine University of Agriculture. He also completed a Diploma in Leadership Essentials through IMD Online Programs.

With over 20 years of experience in research, program development, and leadership, including more than 10 years in senior management roles, Lawrence brings extensive expertise in community-based conservation, youth engagement in landscape restoration, policy advocacy, ecosystem management, sustainable livelihoods, and social impact assessment.

Lawrence has been instrumental in shaping WWF Tanzania’s conservation strategy, leading the development of landscape-level programs and innovative projects in collaboration with international WWF offices. He has contributed significantly to policy advocacy, strategic planning, and the creation of communication materials that engage stakeholders and support sustainable conservation outcomes. His leadership ensures WWF Tanzania’s programs are impactful, community-centered, and aligned with global conservation priorities
